The Congress mahila power stormed the Mapusa vegetable market on Saturday, calling the BJP-run government insensitive and demanding relief from rise in prices of vegetable and other goods.
State Mahila Congress President Sunita Verekar leading a protest on price rise in Mapusa, blamed “udta Modi” for the suffering of “budta aadmi”, who has been crushed under the weight of the steep rise in prices of vegetable and pulses.
“Udta Modi is flying high on his achievements and along with him the rate of consumables are also rising. The Budta aadmi, however, is getting crushed under the weight of the rise in prices,” Verekar said.
The State Mahila Congress president was speaking at the Mapusa vegetable market while leading the protest against rise in vegetable prices in the State. She was accompanied by members of other Congress wings.
“Tomatoes, which were available for Rs 10 a kg, are today priced at Rs 80 a kg. We Goans use tomatoes in all our recipes and the rise in cost has hurt all hard,” Verekar said further.
She further said that inflation has not even spared pulses, as the cost of tur dal has shot up to Rs 200 a kg.
“Before Modi-government came to power the rate of Tur dal was Rs 80 kg. The BJP karyakatas shouted and protested against the Congress-led government over rise in prices then. But the same BJP people cannot feel the heat of the rising prices now,” she said.
“Dal is supposed to be poor man’s food. But the Modi-led government has stomped on the livelihood of the poor,” she said and added, “Vegetable, dal and chicken is disappearing from people’s plate, as aam aadmi can’t afford to buy these things.”
She urged the government to subsidize these costly consumables so that people cannot afford to buy them at cheaper rate.
Slamming the government for the rise in price, Sava Dal Mahila Swati Kerkar said that it was double whammy for the common men with price rise and unemployment.
“People are ready to give up their lives to save jobs but this government has no concern for the common man,” Kerkar said.
She said that the government sponsored schemes like Griha Aadhar and Laadli Laxmi was of no use, as the money from these schemes was pittance compared to the inflation.
“This government has no concern for women. It only announces schemes after schemes, but is not aware if it really reaches to those in need,” she added.
Goa Pradesh Mahila Congress Spokesperson Pratima Coutinho and Mapusa Block Congress President Vijay Bhike also spoke on the occasion.
Congress youth president Sudin Naik, NSUI, Chandan Manderkar and Mapusa Mhila President, Mitali Gadekar were also present among others.
